111On Wednesday 20th September, 2017, the University conducted a National Biosecurity Workshop organized by the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), Commission for University Education (CUE) and the Centre for Biosecurity and Biopreparedness (CBB), Denmark.

The Workshop which was graced by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Josephine Ngaira, saw a number of scholars from different disciplines exchange ideas relating to Biological security threats, current status of Biosecurity in Kenya, and Biopreparedness in issues related to Biosecurity. Other topics for discussion included: dual-use technology and responsible science, and development of Biosecurity educational resources and support.

The workshop aimed at creating awareness and developing an enhanced Biosecurity culture among university researchers, staff and students in the life sciences in Kenya which will in turn improve security protocols in universities.

Working with partners, the Centre for Biosecurity and Biopreparedness (CBB), Denmark intends to support the institutionalization of Biosecurity awareness by taking steps to integrate Biosecurity awareness raising in relevant university curricula. Once integrated, national staff will conduct lectures and workshops based on material developed by experts.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) on the other hand is expected to work with partner University administration and staff in the life science departments to adopt the modules developed as requirements for students taking Life Sciences.

A number of relevant literature were donated to staff in various departments at MMUST.
