1122The 1st Media Debate forum was held on Friday 6th October 2017 at MCU in Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology partnering with Deustche Welle Akademia from Germany, local established journalists, invited guests from neighbouring universities and MMUST media students . The forum was graced by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Fredrick Otieno who encouraged all media students to observe media ethics, for Kenya to have a corrupt free society and a true democracy. Journalists from different media houses got the opportunity to share their life experience stories and ideas with students and lecturers.

The forum aimed at addressing corruption in the media industry with media personalities and guests sharing their experiences and how they dealt with their situations in different scenarios.

There were two representatives from Deutsch Welle academia who stressed on credibility as key factor in eradicating corruption at personal level since corruption starts from the bottom before escalating. Other speakers, Kate(Nyota FM), Kevin Omollo, Grace Njeri(Standard Media) encouraged students to always try and be risk takers since media has a role to play and they should not don corruption.

Dr. Charles Nyabuga from Maseno University also said that journalists should be objective as sometimes journalism is more of a duty than a call. The chair of the Journalism department Dr. Perez Wenje and Dr. Lydia Anyonje also called upon the students to be versatile and work hard for them to survive in the media world waiting for them after school.

The forum was a huge success as MMUST media students learned and were mentored by speakers. Facilitators and guests expressed their gratitude and thanked students for turning up. The media students also thanked the Vice Chancellor for making time and joining them in the forum.
Later, the duo from Deutsche Welle Akademia, Charles Achaye and Jutta von Hofe made a courtesy call to the Vice Chancellor where they discussed the possibility of MMUST having an MOU with Deutsche Welle which will see students and staff go on program and also help revamp registration.
