Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has been holding the Basic Football Coaching course under the aegis of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) at the University grounds.
The two-week coaching course facilitated by nationally-acclaimed football instructors Mr Hezbon Nyabinge and Dan Omondi started on 24th October 2016 and ended on 2nd November 2016. It was attended by 72 upcoming coaches drawn from Kakamega County and the larger Western region, some whom students from MMUST, focused on critical coaching skills which are needed for the C21st football and on effectiveness and efficiency in sports.
The colourful closing ceremony on 2nd November 2016 was attended by the Football Kenya Federation NEC official Mr Tony Kweya who represented the Federation and spoke on behalf of the FKF President, Nr Nick Mwendwa. Mr Kweyu thanked the University for partnering with FKF to accord young talent facilities and grounds at the University which made the activity a memorable success. “We should aim at making the University the Centre of Excellence in sports. This can be one sooner rather than later,” Mr Kweyu said.
Addressing the participants during the closing ceremony, the Deputy Secretary General KEFOKA Mr Imonje appreciated the role that the University has played in developing the greater western region and Kenya in general in a number of respects. “Such an event will contribute positively towards reviving clubs in this Kenya. As the new coaches in football, you need to work hard,” Mr Imonje urged the participants. Mr Jack Makokha of the Lubinu Rangers a Division One club urged the upcoming coaches to maintain self-discipline at all times.
Among the Football officials were the Head, League and Competitions and Vice Chairman, FKF Western Branch Dr Moses Akali, the FKF Treasurer Nebere Barasa and Assistant Secretary General Mr Chite. The University was represented by the Director International Relations and Linkages Dr Bob Mbori who represented the Vice Chancellor. Other officers from MMUST included Mrs Milkah Waswa and Mr Tobias Lihanda.
