kusaTwo Masinde Muliro university students participated in the recently concluded East, Central and Southern Africa (ECASA) Scrabble Championships were held in Dar es Salaam from the 14th to the 18th April 2017. The two, Munge Kinyanjui and Evelyne Gathoni qualified for the Championships after emerging as the best University students after a series of nine qualifier stages organized by Scrabble Kenya. 

The ECASA tournament was the second international championship for the two MMUST scrabble players and was the first time they were wearing the national Kenya Team colours. Munge Kinyanjui emerged as the best international debutante in the Tanzanian city Dar at position 40 having amassed 1094 international rating points following his 13 wins. Evelyne Gathoni was 56th after 27 rounds of play with a provisional international rating of 1056 after 11 wins.

The two MMUST students were part of the Kenyan team that won the team title for the 11th time in a row. The winning Kenyan scrabble delegation had 39 wordsmiths drawn from different professions and walks of life. According to Kinyanjui, one of the players, “Playing as part of the National team was a dream come true. We hope to qualify for the World English Language Scrabble Players Championship that will be held for the first time in Africa, in Nairobi in November 2017.” MMUST hopes to take part in this tournament.

Munge and Gathoni now join the league of elite scrabble players in Kenya in a Mind game where Kenya is ranked second after the 2015 World Champions, Nigeria. Attached is the list of honors the MMUST scrabble team has scooped in the last eighteen months.
