mmust sponsored kakamega goldfields golf championship in actionFor the second time in a row, Mr. George Ombito of Kakamega Sports Club emerged the Overall Gross Winner with 37 scores of the just ended MMUST sponsored Kakamega Goldfields Golf Championships held at Kakamega Sports Club on 17th June to 18th June, 2017. The two-day championship attracted over 70 golfers from different golf clubs across the country such as Mumias, Nandi Bears, Eldoret, Kitale, Kericho, Kisumu, Njoro, Kakamega and golfers from the diaspora who included Mbale in Uganda and Kigali, Rwanda.

The curtain raiser of this year’s edition of the Championships was the long awaited signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between MMUST and Kakamega Sports Club which will be of mutual benefit to both partners. 

At the prize giving ceremony, on evening of Sunday, 18th July 2017, Mr. Eliud Siganga, Chairman of Kakamega Sports Club thanked Masinde Muliro University for sponsoring the Championship for the fourth time running. Siganga said the Club is excited at the formalization of the collaboration and appealed to MMUST staff and students to make use of the available facilities at the Club. 

MMUST Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eng. FAO Otieno underscored the commitment by the University through the Sports Science department to nurture talent of the young golfers whose exploits will redefine the golfing sport in the region and beyond. Prof. Otieno commended the organizers of the tournament adding that the tournament is part of MMUSTs Corporate Social Responsibility and he is glad that MMUST is giving back to the society. 

MMUST family was ably represented as some of the MMUST staff scooped prizes for outstanding performance. Among the MMUST golfers who participated in the tournament and were feted included: Prof F.A.O.Otieno who garnered the Sponsor’s award, Mrs. Rosemary Angote and Dr. Beatrice Shikuku walked away with the coveted Lady winner awards.

While giving his speech, after being crowned the winner, Mr.Ombito revealed his secret to success was full dedication and commitment to the golfing sport. He encouraged lovers of the golf to religiously train if they hope to win. Ombito thanked Mr. Indiza, the Professional Golfer for always playing with him. Among the co-sponsors of the tournament included of the Walias Supermarket, Nation Media Group and The Standard.
