A partnership between Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Kenya Coast National Polytechnic (KCNP) has seen the two Institutions develop a synergy in a programme in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences.

Members from the two Institutions met on Monday 26th June, 2017 to review the draft Curriculum and harmonize the Diploma in Optometry programme. The team of scholars agreed on a formulated substantive curriculum which would see students from KCNP coming to MMUST for an academic exchange program and for Clinical Rotations.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. F.A.O. Otieno, welcomed the KCNP members to MMUST and appreciated the efforts exhibited by both parties in strengthening the collaboration between MMUST and KCNP. He called upon the participants to put the interests of the students and lecturers at the core of their business and try as much as possible to create efficiency in the Optometry programmes.

There will be the establishment of a Diploma in Optometry programme at KCNP, an idea which was welcomed by the KCNP members.

The Coordinator KCNP/MMUST programmess, Ms Getrude Mutie, highlighted the need to recognize the role of Intellectual Property Rights which would ensure that only professionals in Optometry come on board to steer the reviewed programme.

Other members present at the meeting were: Dr. Catherine Aura, Director DIAL, Dr. G. Nguka, Director ODeL, Dr. Emmanuel Okenwa, CoD Optometry and Visual Sciences, MMUST, Mr. Duncan Awino, HOD Medical Sciences, KCNP, Mr. Alfred Ragot, Clinical Instructor, MMUST and Mr. Yego Walter, an Optometrist.
