xx3Students and staff of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology will now tap into the wide array of available opportunities following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between MMUST and Kakamega Sports Club. The two institutions signed a MoU on Tuesday, 13th June, 2017 that will among other key benefits see the MMUST Sports Science department utilize facilities at the Kakamega Sports Club for training of students.

Prof. Eng. FAO Otieno, the Vice Chancellor who hosted the team from Kakamega Sports Club in his boardroom noted that the collaboration was timely as the two institutions will harness the energies between the two institutions towards mutual benefit. Prof. Otieno added that the partnership will be instrumental in the transfer of skills as the youth will also be taught the golf sport which for long has been associated with the rich. 

Prof. Otieno said that MMUST has the capacity to inject professionalism into all the activities of Kakamega Sports Club. He added that the Club will provide the much needed opportunity for MMUST staff and students to network with other education stakeholders within the County and beyond. The VC appealed to the leadership of the Club to tap into MMUST capacity and offer corporate membership to MMUST staff at concessional rates so as to grow the Club. MMUST has been the official sponsor of the Kakamega Goldfields Golf Championship for the last 4 years. Prof. Otieno observed that the MoU signing was the perfect curtain raiser for this year’s tournament which is slated for Saturday, 17th June, 2017 and Sunday, 18th June, 2017. 

Addressing participants on behalf of the Club, the Chairman, Kakamega Sports Club Management committee, Mr. Eliud Siganga revealed that the new members from MMUST shall benefit from reciprocating clubs. Siganga said that the Club is grateful for the support by the University that has made their tournaments competitive and attractive to golfer across the country and beyond.
Among other areas of collaboration that will drive the partnership included sharing of facilities, utilization of resources such a tennis and squash courts, conference facilities, accommodation and free rider on marketing of products. 

Siganga was accompanied at the MoU signing by his Honarary Secretary, Ms. Angela Kiveu and the Club Manager, Mr. Ignatius Shikanga. The MMUST team that flanked the Vice Chancellor included: Dr. Catherine Aura, the Ag. Director, DIAL, Dr. Peter Bukhala and Issa Kweyu from the Department of Sports Science, Dr. Bob Mbori, Ag. Dean, School of Arts and Social Sciences, and the University Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Winnie Malala.
