Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) was initially established as a university college of Moi University in 2002 and was then known as the Western University College of Science and Technology (WUCST). The University College was later elevated to university status through an Act of Parliament on 30th December, 2006 (now repealed) and renamed Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST). The University is the successor of the defunct Western College of Arts and Applied Sciences (WECO) whose assets and liabilities it inherited. The University is located along the Kakamega-Webuye Road, one kilometer from the Central Business District (CBD) of Kakamega Town. The main campus stands on about 133 acre piece of land.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) established a University Campus at Webuye known as MMUST-Webuye Campus. The campus is situated along Eldoret - Malaba highway adjacent to Pan Paper Mills Ltd within Webuye town. The campus was established in April, 2010, initially as a study centre, by the University following the signing of an MoU with the Government Task Force for the revival of Pan Paper Mills upon request from the community and political leadership. The District Education Board meeting held on 21st October 2009 at the Pan paper Guest House came up with the idea that MMUST be requested to establish a campus at the former Pan Paper High School facilities. The serene environment is ideal for learning and now the campus is fully operational with very high potential for growth.
The expansion of the University to Webuye town was also the university’s effort to bring higher education closer to the people of Western Kenya region. The University is committed to nurturing the University Campus to a Constituent College of MMUST and eventually to a full-fledged public university in line with the Commission for University Education (CUE) standards and guidelines, 2014. Once it gains the status of a Constituent University College, it shall then operate as a corporate body with an independent governance structure; and offer academic programmes through the senate of MMUST, the mentoring University.
