Message from the Executive Dean

The construction of a medical school with a research and teaching hospital at MMUST in Kakamega, to serve the region and beyond is being undertaken. The community is very excited and supportive because they believe this will reduce the high death rates and minimise the excessive patient referrals outside the region.

This region has the highest overall death rates of any rural county due to the large population that inhabits this part of Kenya. The Infant Mortality is >0.45% and the Maternal Mortality is >0.88%. These high death rates are due to acute shortage of staff, especially specialists in all departments in the county healthcare facilities. We believe that University healthcare teams will alleviate this situation to some extent.

The programme will be based at CGH in Kakamega with specialised consultants staying at Mukumu Mission Hospital and St. Marys Hospital. Teaching and clinics shall be operated in all Level 4 County Hospitals with inbuilt community outreach to households; through an organised community elders association.

Although the intention was to admit the first batch of students in September 2015, this date has been pushed to September 2017. The delays are caused by the financial difficulties that the University is experiencing through underfunding.

It is our goal to train: MBChB, BSc (Clinical Medicine/Officers), MMed, MSc, PhD and MD.

Both our lecturers and students shall perform clinical duties providing healthcare services to patients in an effort to alleviate the existing staff shortage.

We are receiving many volunteer adjunct professors from USA, Canada, UK, Denmark, Sweden and Australia, who have expressed their desire to come and help at their own cost.

We wish to appeal to all Kenyans of goodwill to donate whatever is possible through our Pay Bill No. 800984 and a secure MMUST-School of Medicine KCB Bank Account at KCB protected by four signatories drawn from both MMUST administration and the School of Medicine.
