Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has today 27th March 2025 conducted internal self-assessment in preparation for MMUST TVET College kick off. The twin objectives of the assessment included preparation for accreditation by TVETA and establishment of the status of the implementation of CUE recommendations for campus accreditation. This follows the appointment of the Ag. Principal, TVET- Prof. Stephen Odebero.

Speaking during the evaluation exercise the Quality Assurance Director- Prof. Danstone Lilechi who was representing the Vice Chancellor, pointed out that the focus of the exercise was to check the suitability and functionality of various sections such as Institutional Leadership Management and Administration, Physical Facilities, Human Resource Establishment, Courses, Curriculum and Enrollment, Trainer Preparation and Examination as well as Industrial Attachment.

Representing the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Moses Poipoi stated that the Division of Academic and Student Affairs will support the fast-tracking of operations at the Institute. “As we transit towards CBC and its first batch of students in 2029, this institute will absorb the large number of students rolling out from high school. I call upon stakeholders, specifically the County Government of Bungoma to assist this college in its take off,” he said.

Expressing delight at the appointment of the Ag. Principal, the Chairperson of the TVET Board- Mr. Wakungwi Sakwa commended the University for the move saying that it will now be possible to implement TVETA processes such as the weighting regarding practicals. “With the independence of the institute, our students will have access to government capitation. TVET is the impetus for growth. We need to ensure that not only are students brought here but Webuye campus is active. As a board we are determined to ensure that students are here by May. We have the capacity to attract students and keep pace with industry changes,” said Mr. Sakwa. The other members of the board present were Prof. Lt. Col. (rtd) John Martin Okoth and Prof. Francis Muyekho.
Affirming his resolve to support and cooperate with the newly appointed duo, the Director of Webuye Campus- Prof. Peter Odera stated that he is happy about this transition which will certainly contribute to the growth of the MMUST TVET institute. “My dream has been for Webuye campus to thrive. We need the input of all stakeholders as we take off,” he added.

Acknowledging this appointment, Prof. Odebero expressed gratitude to the management for giving him such an honor. “This appointment is evidence that the University management has confidence in me to steer this institution to greatness. I acknowledge the support I have received from the Director- Webuye campus, Prof. Peter Odera and the guidance given to me by the MMUST TVET board Chairman- Mr. Wakungwi Sakwa. I will work closely with the TVET board to ensure that we have students here by May 2025,” said Prof. Odebero.

Equally, the Head of Social Sciences and Ag. Head of Educational Studies- Dr. Ben Oseno urged the incoming managers to optimally utilize the available staff and resources for excellence and posterity. Commenting on this exercise, the Director (Privately Sponsored Student Programs)- Dr. Edwin Kanda noted that the University is keen to ensure financial sustainability in all institutions affiliated to MMUST.
The Acting. Deputy Principal, Dr. Sabella Kiprono affirmed that the TVET institute is beneficial to the communities in the entire region and that they are committed to ensure that the TVET meets not only today’s but also future demands. It will promote the economy of Webuye Town.

Highlighting the specific details of the audit, the Coordinator (Quality Assurance) who was also the deputy team leader- Dr. Paul Ogenga stated that the finer aspects of the audit involved checking theory rooms, laboratories and workshops, sanitation facilities, water and electricity, safety, recreational facilities, health unit, ICT, and accommodation. Other pertinent issues included staffing, courses offered, courses accredited by TVETA, student enrollment, professional documents, examination and analysis. Regarding industrial attachment, the tem focused on industrial attachment policy, office, liaison officer and attachment records. The other auditors involved in this exercise were Mr. Daniel Chirchir, Mr. Job Sirengo and Mr. Cornelius Chemwile.
The other notable key players in this exercise included Ms. Lillian Kundu- Senior Assistant Registrar in the HR department, Ms. Mable Wambani (Senior Administrative Assistant TVET Institute), Ms. Annah Okang’a (Clerical Officer), and Mr. Wabwile Natembea (Estate Department).
The internal self-assessment conducted for MMUST TVET College take off is the spring board upon which the institution will leap towards great academic and professional accomplishment. Indeed, the ripple effect of setting up this educational establishment will be felt by communities today and generations to come.
