Mercy Karanja, Joan Cherotich, Stephen Munyiri and Wycliffe Soita, undergraduate students pursuing Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology in the Department of Biological Sciences (School of Natural Sciences-MMUST) on Industrial Attachment at the KALRO Biotechnology Research Institute at Muguga in Kiambu County under the mentorship of the KALRO Biotechnologists Dr. Benard Wanyonyi and Dr. Stephen Wekesa, and Dr. Dennis M.W. Ochieno (MMUST), in June 2021. “During our attachment at the Biotechnology Research Institute, we successfully learnt the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), Maggot Therapy for wound treatment, Tsetse fly mass-rearing techniques, gram staining technique, drug sensitivity test using mice, DNA Extraction, PCR and Gel electrophoresis. We also learnt how to map locations using GPS trackers, counting of trypanosomes in blood using Herbert and Lumber scoring method, using packed cell volume (PCV) to determine anaemia level in blood among other techniques. The experience has been satisfactory and very engaging and we have been able to put into practice most of the theoretical knowledge we learnt from our MMUST Biotechnology Curriculum, which features courses in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Entomology, Parasitology, Immunology, Hematology and Bioinformatics”.
