MMUST Hosts Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu CEO to Discuss Possible Areas of Collaboration

Speaking during the MMUST-AKHK meeting, Prof. Shibairo stated that he looked forward to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two (2) institutions. “Healthcare is one of MMUST’s flagship programs with a focus on not only teaching but also becoming a referral and research center. I believe that such partnerships are crucial in helping us achieve this,” said the Vice-Chancellor.

Ms. Wanyama pointed out that there are many areas in which the University and the hospital could partner, including clinical education and research. “At AKHK, we are cognizant that healthcare is about partnerships. We have established MoUs with Counties and institutions of higher learning in an effort to expand the hospital, as well as to extend its services to the community,” she said.

Other members of MMUST and AKHK present during the meeting were; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration and Finance), Prof. J. Kuria Thuo, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning, Research, and Innovation), Prof. Charles Mutai, Dean School of Medicine, Dr. Donald A. Kokonya, MMUST Medical Officer, Dr. Patrick Wanguche, AKHK’s Business Development and Communication Manager, Ms. Rita Gachahi, AKHK’s Project Manager, Mr. Kennedy Mulama and Aga Khan Foundation’s Fellow, Ms. Jenna Mulji.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has worked together with Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu on a number of projects. Recently, the University hosted a blood donation drive initiative which was organized through the Kenya Red Cross Society and sponsored by MMUST in partnership with the Standard Chartered Bank and AKHK to commemorate World Blood Donor Day. There is no doubt that a Memorandum of Understanding between the two (2) institutions will yield projects that will have a significant impact on society.
