MMUST’S AIDS CONTROL, GENDER AND DISABILITY MAINSTREAMING UNIT TRAINS GENDER MAINSTREAMING COMMITTEE IN A BID TO UPSCALE IMPLEMENTATION OF GENDER PRACTICES

The Committee Members who were present included, Prof. John Shiundu- Chairman, Prof. Gladys Mengich, Prof. Kennedy Otieno, Dr. Annette Okoth, Dr. Lucy Mandillah, Dr. Philip Mukonyi, Dr. Selina Ooko, Mr. Josephat Shigogodi, Mr. Levi Wanyama, CPA Stellah Kabuga, Ms. Tabitha Shisia and Ms. Garvin Nyarotso. The other committee member is Prof. Danstone Barasa.

Speaking during the workshop, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo assured the Gender Mainstreaming Committee that the University management is committed to implementing the gender mainstreaming policy and ensuring a safe and productive environment for both staff and students. “Our organizational culture and practices are supposed to help promote better gender relations”, he stated

The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning Research and Innovation, Kisumu County, who accompanied the Vice Chancellor, pointed out that gender is about recognizing and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms to preserve the dignity of individuals and communities. “When women proper, men automatically also prosper. That is why as a University we fully support this initiative by the AIDS Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming Unit”, he said.

The Chairman, Gender Mainstreaming Committee, Prof. John O. Shiundu was optimistic that with the support of the University Management the Gender challenges at the institution will soon be a thing of the past. “We thank the University Management for supporting this training. As the Chairman of the Gender Mainstreaming Committee, I assure you that this committee is on course and ready to rectify any gender related issues in the University.”

The interesting and informative training was organized by the Coordinator, AIDS Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming Unit, Prof. Gladys Mengich and her team who included, Ms. Elizabeth Simiyu, Selipher Sabatia, Garvin Nyarotso, Kennedy Anjieho, Adelaide Imbuka and intern Gloria Nyagol.

The facilitators were Mr. Shadrack Okumu who is the County Coordinator, Gender and Social Development, Kisumu County and Ms. Grace Bakesia, a tutorial fellow in the Department of Reproductive and Child Health, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Sciences.

Mr. Okumu took participants through Gender and Sex as well as Sexual and Gender- based Violence Situation Analysis in Kakamega County while Ms. Bakesia trained them on Sexual and Gender-based violence in MMUST and Forms of Sexual and Gender-based violence.

Other institutions in the higher education sector need to emulate this commendable imitative by the MMUST management to support gender mainstreaming capacity building for better relationships and better organizations.
