Regarding governance and leadership in the age of COVID-19, Prof. David Monda concurred with Dr. Murunga’s sentiments on research. He noted that quality, value addition and the technical aspects in research writing are key factors to be considered when seeking international funding. Prof. Monda spoke about other vital issues including weaknesses in governance, Government’s power, ethnicity and the importance of understanding broader aspects of research.

MMUST’s Director Research and Postgraduate Support, Prof. Peter Bukhala explains a point to Mr. Peter Achemee, a member of staff at the University.

In one of the presentations, Conduct of Online Learning During the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Case of Masinde University of Science and Technology Dr. Teresa Okoth, who is also the Director of Career Services noted that the onset of COVID-19 has tested the readiness of Universities and other academic institutions to deal with abrupt crises.

“COVID-19 has presented a challenge of effective learning using online teaching and learning platforms. The abrupt change from face to face to virtual learning has resulted in technical and network challenges, financial constraints and difficulty in conducting of practicals. The online mode of study also presented problems such as inability to influence active learning and assessment of learning,” said Dr. Teresa Okoth.

Other notable presentations which were made by various scholars included; ‘Gender Analysis and Inclusion in STEM Education and Research: Institutional Transformations to Strengthen Women’s Leadership in STEM’ - Dr. Catherine Aura, and the ‘Effect of Workforce Diversity on Organizational Performance in Public Universities in Western Kenya’ – Prof. Robert Egessa.

With such great presentations by scholars, CODESRIA and other research oriented organizations can finally demystify the previously insurmountable problem of ‘publishing’ by African researchers.
