Efforts to Enhance MMUST-Industry Linkages Continue as the University Discusses Establishing MOU With icare School of First Aid

MMUST-icare School of First Aid teams at the Directorate of International Relations and Academic Linkages.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with icare School of First Aid, a non-profit organization established to reduce disaster risks, and to provide safety solutions in Kenya. Today, 12th September, 2023, icare’s Chief Executive Director-Mr. John T. Kariuki, HSC, paid a courtesy call to the Directorate of International Relations and Academic Linkages (DIAL) to discuss potential areas of collaboration between the two (2) institutions.

Mr. Kariuki, who was accompanied by icare’s Director of Programs and Operations -Ms. Sarah Sirengo, was received by the Director-DIAL, Dr. Umulkher Ali, along with the Dean- School of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (SDMHA), Dr. Ferdinand Nabiswa.

In his remarks, Dr. Nabiswa stated that the MoU, spearheaded by SDMHA, will involve other sections in the University, including the Department of Paramedical Science, as well as that of Health Promotion and Sports Science. The Dean, who is also the Chairman of MMUST’s Partnerships and Collaborations Committee, noted that the University is dedicated to ensuring that its students are continuously interacting with the industry.

The Chief Executive Director revealed that icare School of First Aid has partnered with the County Government of Kakamega on many projects, worked with several institutions of higher learning, and that it has established links with the US Embassy. Further, he stated that his organization is committed to cultivating and sustaining a culture of safety, adding that their mission is to equip people with the knowledge and skills to identify and handle threats.

Dr. Ali reiterated that industry-academia linkages are very important, and added that this collaboration will help MMUST to steer its mandate of providing quality education, training and research. The Chairperson- Department of Disaster Management and Sustainable Development, Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, pointed out that disasters are increasing in the country and that there is a need to establish a center of excellence with regard to training and capacity enhancement in disaster management. On his part, Dr. Issah Kweyu emphasized the adoption of a community service learning model in the University.

This partnership has once again demonstrated MMUST’s dedication to linking academia with industry. The University is undoubtedly on the right track to churning out work-ready graduates.
