Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) on 30th January 2025, conducted an informative training session for its staff, focused on retirement planning and the benefits provided through the Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme (SRBS). The event, organized by Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme, was designed to equip staff with crucial insights on their retirement planning, pension benefits, and financial management. The Member Education Training took place at the Shieywe Guest House in Kakamega County and attracted many participants from various departments.

The event was graced by the Vice Chancellor- Prof. Solomon Shibairo who is also a Trustee in the Scheme. Prof. Shibairo emphasized the importance of financial planning for retirement saying that the Scheme must endeavor to secure the financial well-being of the staff once they retire. “As an institution, we are committed to ensuring our staff are well-prepared for the future. This training day is a vital part of that commitment, that will enable you to make informed choices about your retirement benefits,” said Prof. Shibairo
The other Trustees present included; Prof. Joseph Nasongo, Prof. Alice Ndiema, Prof. George Lawi, Dr. Eglay Tsuma, Prof. Peter Bukhala, Mr. Patrick Kivale, and Ms. Dorah Mbakaya. Mr. Bernard Wesonga and Ms. Celestine Mmasi from the Scheme’s Secretariat were also present at the event.

The training provided an in-depth discussion on the pension plan and several presentations including; Salient Features of the Scheme and Options Available for Benefits Access, Pension Taxation and Retirement Income, Change Management (Planning for Lifestyle Changes in Retirement), Financial Planning and Saving, as well as Pre and Post Retirement Planning. The external facilitator- Mr. Fadhili Milimu Masitsa led the sessions, offering practical advice and tips on how staff can optimize their savings and make informed decisions about their future.
This training is part of MMUST’s ongoing efforts to prioritize the welfare and well-being of its staff. With a focus on equipping employees with the knowledge they need to plan for a comfortable and secure retirement, the University continues to play a key role in supporting its workforce through professional development initiatives. The University is looking forward to organizing similar events in the future to continue educating staff on the importance of retirement planning and the benefits available through the SRBS.
