Edwin Mtange alias King Mtange, the fluent Swahili Spoken Word artist is rocking the entertainment industry with his expertise in media, poetry and the spoken word. He has gone against all odds and is now a pot of gold to most media practitioners as he is all rounded with a variety of skills needed to run a media house. Mtange is a second year student pursuing Journalism and Mass Communication at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. King Mtange, has previously worked with Magharibi TV and is currently volunteering at Pendo TV as a graphics designer, videographer and screen play writer.
The Rugby Championship for the 2019/2020 season kicked off on Saturday, 26th October 2019 with MMUST RFC travelling to Egerton University, Njoro for the opening match. Captained by Samwel Mbeche, MMUST who lost to Kisumu at the Quarter finals last season maintained a strong side with two new signings Jadah Abdon (Kiumu RFC) and youngster Nelson Babu who was a regular at St. Peters Mumias High School both making their debut in the starting lineup. The match saw a glaring absence of Timothy Mmasi who was out on recovery after the International duty at the Tusker Safari Sevens in Nairobi.
The 6th Edition of the Nation Media Group Career Fair organized by myNetwork pullout magazine, took place on Friday, 27th September 2019 at the Rift Valley Sports Club in Nakuru.
Different universities and tertiary colleges were brought under one roof, providing their potential students with an opportunity to compare programmes and make informed choices. Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), through the Directorate of Career Services, was part of this impactful event that attracted a good number of Form Four leavers and students seeking to join higher learning institutions in the country.
MMUST was on Thursday 3rd October 2019 privileged to be chosen by Germany based Hochschule Weihenstephan-Triesdorf (HSWT) University of Applied Sciences among the many universities in Kenya as the best destination to host the “Training Pact with Africa”. The training Pact with Africa is essentially a cooperation platform for institutions of higher education in Africa focusing on applied life sciences like Agriculture and related disciplines.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) members of staff, through the Directorate of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) at the institution, went through training in Competency Based Assessment (CBA) on Monday 19th to Thursday 22nd August, 2019. The CBA training, which was carried out by representatives from the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC), laid emphasis on competence based education and training given that the competence based curriculum is already rolled out in training institutions.
Early this week on Tuesday 10th September, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology achieved a ‘first’ when Rose Auma became the first Kenyan to successfully defend a PhD, fully done in French in Kenya. The first and second PhDs in French to be defended in Kenya were by Congolese nationals Dr. Ngoy Mwilambwe and Dr. Mulenda Mubalama at Maseno University. Auma’s PhD is therefore the third one in Kenya but the first by a Kenyan in Kenya. Rose Auma belongs to the Language and Literature Education Department at MMUST which houses French, Kiswahili, English, Literature and Communication Skills. Producing this prestigious PhD is a milestone for MMUST.
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has set up a well- equipped Media Lab which will serve its students at the start of the 2019/2020 Academic year. The Department, through the Procurement Office, received the state of the art equipment worth Kshs five (5) million on 27th June, 2019.
A Memorial Public Lecture and Service in honor of the late Hon. Henry Pius Masinde Muliro was held on 12th and 14th August 2019 respectively. The Memorial Public Lecture was held at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology while the memorial service took place at the late anti-colonial activist’s home in Sibanga, Trans-Nzoia County. These marked the inaugural 27th Anniversary Celebrations for the late political leader who played a central role in shaping the political landscape in Kenya.
