The 7 Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Student Organization (MMUSO) electoral process has come to a successful conclusion as the new leaders took oath of office on Monday, 19 February, 2024. The swearing in ceremony, which involved the Electoral College and the Student Executive Council (SEC), was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo.
“Your fellow students have given you the responsibility to lead them. By voting you into various positions, it means that they have a lot of confidence in you and therefore don’t let them down,” stated Prof. Shibairo, adding that the newly elected leaders should work and produce results that will help the University rise to a higher level.

In his remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs)-Prof. Hussein Golicha, commended the organizers of the 7th MMUSO elections for a job well-done. While congratulating the new leaders, Prof. Golicha urged them to do what is expected of them for the sake of MMUST. “As student leaders, you should always consult with each other, seek guidance from the Dean of Students and her team of experts, as well as the University Management,” he said.
“Each year, elections come with different challenges but the support that we get from the Management keeps us going,” pointed out the Dean of Students, Dr. Bernadette Abwao, who further appreciated the team that worked tirelessly to ensure that the electoral process was a success. She added, “as you embark on this role, let God direct your steps. Be respectful to others and embrace inclusive leadership to ensure that this regime is successful.”

The Chairman, MMUSO Electoral Commission (MEC) 2024-Prof. Kennedy Onkware, thanked the University Management, led by the Vice Chancellor, for giving him the opportunity to oversee this year’s elections. “I am grateful to the team that I worked with throughout the electoral process. This is a group that the University can always rely on and I highly recommend it for the next elections,” stated Prof. Onkware.
The swearing in session was presided over by MMUST’s Senior Legal Assistant, Ms. Linda Omenya, who said that the ceremony was in accordance with Article 74 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010, which states that before assuming office, an officer shall take and subscribe the oath or affirmation of office. Notably, the Parliamentarians were sworn in as a group, while the SEC members took the oath of office individually.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students of MMUST for showing up to vote and maintaining peace during the entire electoral process. This has not been an easy journey but I am thankful to God for bringing us this far,” said the newly-elected 7th MMUSO Chairperson, Mr. Allan Ochieng, while giving his first speech after taking the oath. He added that he looked forward to working with all the elected members, as well as the Management, to ensure a successful 7th MMUSO Parliament tenure.
The well-organized 7th MMUSO Parliament and Student Executive Council elections were clearly a success and the new leaders are set to undertake their various roles. We congratulate the newly-elected leaders and wish them all the best in their tenure!
