MMUST and National Defense University-Kenya (NDU-K) Set to Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Re-Engineer Security Education in Kenya

MMUST and NDU-K delegation.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and the National Defense University- Kenya (NDU-K) have set in motion talks that will lead to the formalization of their partnership. The aim of the collaboration is to jointly re-engineer security education in Kenya. On 18th April 2024, a delegation from the NDU-K visited MMUST to discuss possible areas of collaboration between the two institutions. The NDU-K team was led by Col (Dr.) Charles.O. Imbiakha and accompanied by Col J.O. Oigara, Col D.O. Ojwang, Col J.M. Ngatia, Lt Col (Dr.) E. Kondoltiony and Mr. Dickens Wendoh. The delegation paid a courtesy call to the office of the Vice Chancellor.

The NDU-K delegation utilized their presence in MMUST to carry out a benchmark on the operations of various sections of the University including; Management of Postgraduate Programmes, Collaborative Research, Quality Assurance tools in areas of Teaching and Examination, Curriculum Development, and Library Processes.  The partnership was initiated by the School of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance led by the Dean, Dr. Ferdinand Nabiswa.

Speaking during the bilateral meeting, the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Mutai expressed delight regarding the collaboration, saying that MMUST is ready to partner with NDU-K to ensure training of top-notch security professionals in Kenya.

“We are looking forward to collaborating with NDU-K. We have a lot in common to craft combined research proposals besides engaging in community outreach activities,” added Prof. Mutai.

He was flanked by the Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellors (Academic and Student Affairs) and (Planning Research and Innovation); Dr. Dishon Wanjere and Prof. Josephine Ngaira respectively. “The NDU-K is a unique institution- one of its kind in East and Central Africa. MMUST also offers very unique courses in Peace, Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance which are critical in the Security sector,” stated Prof. Ngaira.

Re-affirming the NDU-K unique positioning in Kenya’s education sector, Col (Dr.) Charles.O. Imbiakha pointed out that their University is not in competition with public Universities but rather, its main focus is on the National Security Agenda. “The staffing at NDU-K is both civilian and military, therefore MMUST is well positioned to partner with us,” said Col (Dr.) Imbiakha.

MMUST staff present at the meeting included the Associate Dean-SDMHA- Prof. Stanley Omuterema, Prof. Danstone Lilechi, Rev. Prof. Willis Otuya, Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, Dr. Collins Matemba, Rev. Dr. Elijah Odhiambo, Dr. Lydia Anyonje, Dr. Edwin Kanda, Mr. James Muriithi and Ms. Pamela Inzai. The climax of the event will be the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will take place on 19th April 2024 at the Vice Chancellor’s boardroom.
