Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is set to host the Rotaract Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a significant event that focuses on leadership development and mentorship for young people. This was revealed during a courtesy call by the leadership of the Rotaract Club of Kakamega, led by its President, Ms. Josephine Oribo. The delegation, which visited the University on 18th September 2024, was received by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration and Finance, Prof. John Kuria Thuo, who was representing the Vice Chancellor.

Speaking during the visit, Prof. Thuo commended the Rotaract Club for its impactful initiatives, underscoring the importance of mentorship and value-driven leadership in shaping future generations. He noted that well-rounded youth, rooted in integrity and good character, are more likely to thrive in life and provide positive leadership in society.
“Mentorship is key to producing well-rounded individuals who can navigate the challenges of life with strong ethical principles. The Rotary Club’s approach aligns closely with MMUST’s efforts to ensure that our students graduate not only with academic credentials but also with the moral compass needed to contribute positively to society,” said Prof. Thuo. He also revealed that the University is exploring various models to reinforce student mentorship and character-building, advocating for a deeper partnership with the Rotaract Club to enhance student engagement in leadership and community service.

Prof. Thuo highlighted the opportunity the RYLA event presents, noting that it allows MMUST students to learn from international experts and maximize their exposure to real-world leadership experiences. He further emphasized that a partnership between MMUST and the Rotary Club of Kakamega would create valuable platforms for mentorship and practical skill development, ultimately benefiting both the students and the larger community.
The President of Kakamega Rotaract Club, Ms. Josephine Oribo, provided insight into the history and mission of Rotary, noting that the organization is dedicated to mentoring young people and instilling life-long values of integrity, service, and leadership. She expressed her appreciation for the strong partnership that already exists between the Rotaract Club of Kakamega and MMUST’s Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences. Additionally, she welcomed the idea of expanding the collaboration to other areas of the University.

Similarly, Mr. John Sande, a Senior Rotarian, also spoke on the significance of the RYLA event. He noted that it would provide a unique opportunity for young Rotarians to network, showcase their achievements, and receive guidance from more experienced leaders. He also stated that the event will help them prepare young people for leadership roles in their personal and professional lives.
“We look forward to partnering with MMUST in joint community service initiatives, which will not only benefit the local community but also enhance the leadership skills of the young people involved,” he stated.

Other notable personalities present during the meeting include the Incoming Patron MMUST Rotary Club- Dr. Eunice Rapando, and MMUST Rotary club student leaders; Mr. Ezra Okaya, Ms. Loice Achieng, and Mr. Eugene Klamalwa.
