Globalization has stimulated movement towards Internationalisation of Higher Education. This is a pet topic and passion of the MMUST Scholar, Professor Elizabeth Abenga, an expert in Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Internationalisation, and founding Director of International Relations and Academic Linkages at MMUST. Internationalisation of higher education is gaining importance in the operations of all university functions.
However, most institutions globally are not getting it quite right. Universities that have risen to international status have done so by taking advantage of international collaborations and linkages. “MMUST can rise too. I don't see why MMUST shouldn't reap same benefits from internationalisation. What do we lack? In my view we are not fully utilizing the opportunities in the issue 9 of the current Strategic Plan, the present Internationalisation Strategy, and close to fifty international collaborations we have” said Prof. Abenga.
In an effort to promote the Internationalisation of Higher Education, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under the Dialogues on Innovative Higher Education Strategies (DIES) programmes has held a series of DIES training courses on Management of Internationalisation since 2014. Between 19th and 23rd March 2018, the third cohort of this programme was undergoing the second phase of the two year course. This is aimed at building the capacity of managers of international offices at universities in developing countries. This will help grow a critical mass of expertise in Internationalisation and its management within universities. The training is organized by Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) Germany, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Kenya.
Participants from Africa meet at the Sino-Africa Joint Research Centre (SAJOREC) in JKUAT. This year’s programme brought together participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, Sudan, Cameroun, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The team of expert trainers comprised Prof. Elizabeth Abenga, Prof. Charles Ong’ondo of African Network for Internationalisation of Education (ANIE), Prof. John Wesonga (JKUAT), Dr. Bala Ramani (LUH) and Dr. Marcus Hoppe (LUH).
