Engineers Call for Sustainable Solutions as MMUST Marks the World Engineering Day

Engineers have called for sustainable solutions and embracing ethical engineering practices during the World Engineering Day commemorated at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. The event themed ‘Shaping a Sustainable Future through Engineering’ took place on 4th March 2025, and brought together engineers from various sectors including Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), Institution of Engineering Technologists and Technicians (IET), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), Kenya Power and Lighting Company, Lake Victoria North County Government of Kakamega and the County Government of Bungoma. This event was organized by the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) in collaboration with the School of Engineering Built Environment (SEBE)-MMUST.

Speaking during the event, the Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation) Prof. Peter Bukhala advised the practicing engineers to adhere to ethical standards in the construction of buildings, saying that they should consider inclusivity in their designs.

“I applaud the engineers of this University who have played a pivotal role in designing our buildings at MMUST as well as the swimming pool under construction. I urge you to continue being visible and also document your works,” stated Prof. Bukhala.

Engineer Prof. Sibilikhe Makhanu from SEBE, who was also attending the event, pointed out that the true definition of an engineer is a ‘problem solver.’ He provided case studies for participants to understand trends in engineering automation. “Engineers have to address issues of the environment, the economy and society. In order for you to be a good engineer, you need to balance the three aspects to be sustainable,” said Eng. Prof. Makhanu.

The MIEK Chairperson of the Western Branch and Council member of the Institution of Engineers of Kenya, Eng. Christine Ingutia reiterated that engineers must create and innovate sustainably, noting that besides strengthening academia industry collaboration, the IEK partnership with government and other stakeholders yields productive outcomes.

The Dean of SEBE, Eng. Prof. Bernadette Sabuni, who gave the overview of the World Engineering Day, encouraged the student engineers to utilize the event for networking, urging them to ensure they become members of reputable engineering bodies.  Christian Weber, an engineer from Germany, disclosed that he will donate equipment to support student engineers. Echoing the Dean, the Associate Dean-SEBE, Eng. Dr. Peter Cherop thanked the University Management and the sponsors for the support they have accorded them.

Similarly, the Secretary General- IET Eng. Cleophas Opile assured all engineers present of the recognition of the registered professional body of engineers and technologists, adding that such bodies promote the advancement of the profession.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM)- County Education & Vocational Training, Bungoma, Eng. Agnes Wachiye shared her long-term experience in the engineering profession, explaining that climatic changes affect the work of engineers and that 21st century engineers should design bearing in mind the changes taking place. She championed for solutions that go beyond offering solutions and complying with regulations but also influence policy.

Additionally, the Director of Career Services, Prof. Robert Egessa, encouraged the engineers to also focus on soft skills as they pursue their profession. These skills include communication, time management, emotional intelligence, conflict management, continuing education, and keeping abreast of the changing technologies.  The day was marked by a tree planting session, which is in line with the institution’s greening initiative.

MMUST’s commemoration of World Engineering Day is evidence of its dedication to industry linkage and the internationalization of higher education.
