Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, a lecturer in the Centre of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), goes into history books as the first Kenyan to be nominated into the Af-STAG board. The prestigious appointment of Dr. Nyandiko to the Af-STAG board has propelled MMUST into the global limelight as the leading University in Disaster Risk Reduction matters and as a Centre of excellence for training professionals in Disaster Risk Management. Dr. Nyaniko and Tarekegn Ayalew from Ethiopia are the only experts in Disaster Risk Mitigation who have been nominated to represent the East African region. This is the region that encompasses IGAD and East Africa on the Af-STAG board which was established by the African Union Commission (AUC).
The Af-STAG board is part of the global Science and Technology Advisory Group (STAG) which advises the global community on how to improve resilience to disasters and ensure the wellbeing of people through better scientific and technological understanding. STAG seeks to enhance science based decision making at the continental, regional and national levels. The board meets quarterly to design, develop and implement science based Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) programs. Through Af-STAG, Dr. Nyandiko and other appointees from other parts of the world will engage in fundraising and proposal writing on a global scale. Clearly, Dr. Nyandiko is a man to watch in Disaster Risk Reduction international expertise.
