MMUST’s new Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo today hit the ground running with regard to the fight against Covid-19. Flanked by the DVC’s, university registrars, finance officer and a section of the Coronavirus Emergency Response team, the professor inspected stores and laboratories at Star Annex where our sanitizing gels, liquid soaps, Jik, distilled water and sanitizing sprays are kept. Prof. Shibairo was happy to note that all these products in our stores are produced by MMUST through the Chemistry department.
Further, the Vice Chancellor also visited the Skills Laboratory at Star Annex where training of health care providers takes place. The Skills Laboratory is a simulated hospital set up that offers up to date clinical skills. Speaking during the interaction with the Covid-19 team, Prof. Shibairo said sensitization and the use of critical equipment and masks will help fight against Covid- 19.
“We must continue branding MMUST by extending our training to other counties. Our openness will contribute to our safety,” he said.
According to the Chairperson of the department of Paramedical Sciences Dr. Tecla Sum, MMUST is already part of the team involved in Covid- 19 training nationally. It is clear that MMUST is doing a lot to fight Covid-19. In addition, Mr. Victor Ndinda from Medical Laboratory Sciences at MMUST has pointed out that MMUST has identified hot spot areas created by movement of infected people from County to County as an important component in addressing Covid-19. Mr. Ndinda, a key member of the emergency response team, is a Lab-medicine specialist.
However, the Dean, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedical Sciences, Lt. Col. (RTD) Prof. JM Okoth has reiterated that we must continue being vigilant and that surfaces must be disinfected hourly in addition to keeping social distance, ensuring early detection of Covid- 19, quarantining and handwashing. In the words of Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Bernadette Sabuni,
“Let us pray for our institutions, for our nation!”
