 Dr. Mario Kollenberg

Dr. Mario K. studied Biology at Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany, from 2003 to 2008. He specialized in Microbiology and the minor subjects molecular plant biology, cell biology and genetics. He finalized his studies with master's thesis in the Plant Viruses Department at the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ). The topic of this research was "Characterization of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E gene (eIF4E) from susceptible and resistant Manihot esculenta related to infections with Cassava brown streak virus." He holds a postgraduate diploma in Education from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

Dr. Mario K. carried out his PhD research about "Differential transmission of the Begomoviruses Watermelon chlorotic stunt virus and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus by populations of whitefly (Bemisia tabaci)" from 2009 to 2013 under the supervision of Dr. Stephan Winter and Dr. Monika Goetz (DSMZ). Dr. Mario K. joined the Department for Microbial Communication at Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) to do research on aquatic bacteria from May to July 2013. In the same year he accepted an invitation from the former VC Prof. B.C.C. Wangila to come to MMUST as a Lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences.

In MMUST, Dr. Mario lectures courses of microbiology, botany, genetics, tissue culture, molecular biology, ecology, biochemistry, biotechnology, physiology and evolution. He has served as an Examination Coordinator in the Department of Biological Sciences since 2016.
