Prof Barrack Otieno Abonyo
Prof. Abonyo received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology (1991) from Kenyatta University; Masters of Philosophy in Molecular Biology from Moi University/Maseno College (1997), Special graduate Program in Medical Physiology (1999) at Dartmouth College, USA, Ph.D. in Medical Physiology (2001) from East Carolina University, USA and Postdoctoral training in infectious diseases at St. Jude. Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA (2002).
Prior to aforementioned positions Prof. Abonyo worked in the Kenyan Public Service as a Biology
Teacher under Teachers Service commission (1992), Fisheries Officer (1993-96), Tutorial Fellow at Maseno University (1995-97), he joined Florida A and M University in 2003 as a Research Associate and appointed a visiting professor of Biology in 2004. In 2005, Prof. Abonyo was appointed Tenure earning Assistant Professor in Biological Sciences, a position he held until 2008 when he became an Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and consequently promoted to an Associate Professor in the same area in 2009. In December 2012 Prof. Abonyo was appointed 'full professor at the School of Allied Health at Bondo University College and has been consecutively been appointed in the same position at Uzima Medical School (2017) and Masinde Muliro University (2018). Prof. has extensively been consulted in the area of lung inflammatory diseases and his publications have been referenced in high impact medical journals. In 2006, a picture developed by Prof. Abonyo .was chosen for the cover of the Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research. During his tenure at FAMU and the Kisumu County Government', Prof. Abonyo attracted more than $7.5'million grant funds including $200, 000 for the much coveted Rl5 grant and a 1.5 million dollar grant from Department of defense to develop anticancer chemotherapeutic agents.
For recognition of his contribution in research and teaching, Prof. Abonyo received Young Investigators award 'from American Physiological Society (2003), University wide Emerging Researcher of the year 'from FAMU (2010), Emerging Investigator, of the year Award from FAMU College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (2010), teacher of the year (2010) and Who is Who Among American Teachers (2010). In 2010, Prof. Abonyo’s work was highlighted in the International Innovation Magazine. He 'has served as a reviewer for several scientific journals and an editor of Journal of Pharmaceutica Analytica Acta. Apart from serving as a coordinator of several classes, Prof. Abonyo has also served in several University administrative committees as well as search committees for several Deans emphasizing his active role in University administration.
