       Dr. Mary Goretti Kariaga

Dr. Kariaga is a Plant Pathologist with special interest in fungal, Bacterial and Nematode diseases. She holds a Doctoral degree in Disaster management and sustainable development. She wrote a thesis on The Fungal disease of Rice, Rice blast, Pyricularia oryza . https://www.bing.com/search?, She has Identified, sequenced and registered four races of this pathogen in Kenya registered at the NCBI Gene Bank. Her interest on fungi led her into growing mushrooms of edible and medicinal value. Her current interests are in boosting the yields of the same using molecular technology. Her Master’s thesis was on parasitic nematodes, she has written a book “PLANT PARASITIC NEMATIODES ASSOCIATED WITH SUGARCANE IN THE NYANZA SUGAR BELT” an area where she is supervising students.  Dr. Kariaga currently serves as the departmental Chairperson, is a member of Ruforum University committee. Kariaga is also an active member of African women in Science and Engineering and the International women in science, (AWSE & INWES). As a founder member of KEPAWAE, the African women in Agriculture and Environment, she has assisted numerous girls achieve their dreams in education. She has planted forests of trees in schools in Nyanza. Kariaga is active in Outreach activities involving youth, environment and the physically disabled persons.
