Dr. Selline A.Ooko

Dr.Selline Ooko holds a Doctorate degree in Environmental Science specializing in Environmental Health Chemistry. Her areas of academic and research interest are in the fields of medicinal natural products and their application in the management of public health diseases. Her background  as a long serving senior Head of Science at high school level also gives Dr.Selline skills and expertise in conducting Scientific research that link laboratory based teaching with science embedded in the environment, with an aim of  improving performance in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at all levels of Education.

Her major scholarly contribution is the establishment of a non-profit making organization; the African Women in Science and Engineering (AWSE) Western Chapter. Chaired by Selline,AWSE is actively involved in encouraging the participation of girls and women in STEM careers and  forms a link between the community and MMUST. She currently serves as the Department deputy Chairperson of the Postgraduate Studies Committee, and Chairperson Income Generating Unit (IGU)

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy (2012), Environmental Health (Chemistry) Moi University Eldoret,
    Kenya
  • Master of Chemistry (2006), (Organic,Inorganic,Physical,Analytical and Environmental
    chemistry), Moi University, Kenya
  • Bachelor of Education Science (1978), (Education,Chemistry, and Geography), Nairobi
    University, Kenya

Expertise

  • Antimicrobial activity and larvicidal activity of plant extracts. Sustainability in teaching science by using Environment and Jua Kali sheds as teaching laboratories.

Research Interests

The control of public Health Diseases by the use of Plant based materials. This is specifically to reduce water pollution as a means of reducing waterborne diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms and to use plant based materials in the management of malaria through reduction of mosquito vector.Science teaching in secondary schools based on 1) students local background/local environment and 2) local jua kali set up. This is to relate science to our environment and also to reduce the cost of teaching science in Kenyan secondary schools which is teacher orientedand which is based on expensive well build science laboratories.
