MMUST’s Pioneer Class of Biosafety and Biosecurity Program Successfully Takes Off

 MMUST’s new undergraduate Bachelor's program in Biosafety and Biosecurity has successfully taken off with an impressive enrollment of over 20 students. The program is a collaborative effort with the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA) and is the only of its kind globally. This program is domiciled in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences headed by the Chairperson – Mr. Fidelis Mambo. The Technical Advisor of the program is Mr. James Robert Wakungwi Sakwa, who is also a Principal Medical Laboratory Technologist at the Department. 

This unique program is intended to meet the growing demand for qualified biosafety and biosecurity professionals to support both national and global health preparedness and response. Being the only University offering this program globally, MMUST will be the first University to produce professionals in this career.

This degree program entails both theoretical and practical learning that enables students to acquire an in-depth understanding, as well as gain extensive knowledge and requisite skills in biosafety and biosecurity. The program covers diverse topics including Biological Risk Assessment and Mitigation, Laboratory Design and Biocontainment, Biological Non-proliferation, and Cyber Biosecurity.

This key milestone places MMUST on the global map as the pioneer University to define biosafety and biosecurity career paths within the Higher Education system.
