Mmust Promotes the Greening Initiative as they Take Part in Tree Planting Exercise at the Kakamega Tropical Rainforest

We are delighted to inform you that Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has continued to participate in the ‘Greening Initiative’ by taking part in a tree planting exercise at the Kakamega Tropical Rainforest.  The exercise, organized by the Office of the First Lady, took place on 8th June 2023, in the section of land adopted by the First Lady, H.E Rachel Ruto, at the Shikusa Block. This activity is aimed at restoring degraded sections of the Forest, mitigating the adverse effects of climate change in the country, and supporting the national government’s initiative of planting 30 billion trees by 2032.

This tree planting exercise was graced by the First Lady, H.E Rachel Ruto where she planted five tree seedlings. She was also accompanied by the First Lady, Kakamega County, Prof. Janet Kassily, and other dignitaries from different government ministries and agencies. Her Excellency Ms. Rachel Ruto also launched ‘Mama Fruit Gardens' at Shikusa GK Prisons Primary School. She handed over fruit seedlings to the five schools represented at the event. This initiative seeks to support schools to initiate fruit gardens for the provision of a healthy diet and the improvement of the ecosystem.

 

The MMUST team was led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Planning Research and Innovation) Prof. Charles Mutai who also participated in the tree planting exercise. A total number of thirty thousand (30,000) trees were planted at the Shikusa Block.
