Prof. Josephine Ngaira Contributes to the Drafting of the International Science Council (ISC) Statement Titled: Safeguarding and Enhancing International Scientific Collaboration for Climate Action
Prof. Josephine Ngaira, from MMUST was appointed by the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) to contribute her expertise in the drafting and shaping key messages of an international statement on “risks to sustainability science” initiated by the International Science Council titled “Safeguarding and Enhancing International Scientific Collaboration for Climate Action”. The statement published on 4th November, 2025 on the International Science Council (ISC) website; https://council.science/statements/climate-science/ is a powerful collective call from the international scientific community which urges sustained support from governments, multilateral institutions, the science community and the broader public for research and cross-border collaboration to address the climate crisis.
Speaking during an interview with DCCM crew, Prof. Ngaira emphasized the significance of the statement, noting that it is a timely call to action for the global climate financiers. “As an experienced climate scientist and Director, Institute of Indigenous Knowledge, Cultural Studies and Climate Change in MMUST, this statement emphasizes the importance of efficiently financing research in climate action in order to get outputs that will be used for climate adaptation and mitigation by global communities. We need funding institutions, national governments, and philanthropists to put more resources into climate action research in order to limit climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and therefore limit global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius as per the Paris Agreement of 2015,” she stated.
As the scientific community raises alarm over shrinking resources and weakening research infrastructure for climate science, Prof. Ngaira’s contribution in the drafting of this powerful statement elevates MMUST’s realization that climate change is one of the most complex and pressing crises facing humanity that require collaborative action to address it.
