
MMUST Celebrates Its Alumnus Dr. Bernard Chitunga’s Inspirational Rise to Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) Top Leadership
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is proud of the remarkable achievement of its distinguished alumnus, Dr. Bernard William Chitunga, who was recently appointed as the second Chancellor of the Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK). Dr. Chitunga’s academic journey began at MMUST, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Disaster Preparedness and Environmental Technology. This laid the foundation for his illustrious academic and professional career progression. As a youthful Chancellor, Dr. Chitunga has set the ‘Bar too High’ sending a powerful and hopeful message to the younger generation that ‘Youth is not a barrier to leadership.’
His appointment as the Chancellor of Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) was officially announced through Gazette Notice No. 387 by the President of the Republic of Kenya Dr. William Samoei Ruto. Dr. Chitunga’s professional career is marked by the significant roles he has held in both private and public sectors. MMUST takes immense pride in Dr. Chitunga’s accomplishments and applauds him for his unwavering commitment to education and development. His journey from the ‘University of Choice’ to the helm of CUK leadership serves as an inspiration to our students. It also exemplifies the levels that education, dedication and excellence can achieve.
Dr. Chitunga is an African Leadership Fellow at the School of Transnational Governance, European University Institute in Italy. He holds a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Management from KwaZulu-Natal University, South Africa. His incredible academic portfolio also entails two Masters’ degrees and a Postgraduate Diploma. These include a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from UGSM Monarch Business School- Switzerland, a Master of Global Business and Sustainability- Social Entrepreneurship from Universita Cattolica Del Sacro- Italy and Post-Graduate Diploma in Development Strategy and Governance from Bradford University in the United Kingdom.

Besides his role as the Chancellor, Dr. Chitunga is also an International Civil Servant and Global Development Leader with extensive experience and expertise in partnerships, development finance, and multilateralism in Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia. Before his new appointment, he worked at the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) in Cote D’Ivoire, Abidjan as a Senior Officer for Partnerships, Donors, and Special Projects.
Certainly, with the vast expertise Dr. Chitunga has acquired, he is poised to leverage his extensive experience to advance CUK’s mission of becoming a university of excellence in education, research, innovation, and cooperative training. As he assumes his new role as Chancellor, the MMUST community extends its heartfelt congratulations to the ‘Son of Chegulo.’ Congratulations Dr. Chitunga!
