
MMUST Hosts Workshop on Climate and Weather Extreme Events Preparedness
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), through the School of Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, in collaboration with the African Conservation Centre (ACC), is currently hosting a four-day workshop focused on strengthening preparedness for extreme weather and climate events. The workshop commenced on 27th May 2025 and will run until 30th May 2025.
The workshop is titled “Weather and Climate Extreme Events Preparedness Training” and is aimed at expanding the School’s research and practical capacity in addressing climate-related disasters. This initiative brings together scholars, students, and community representatives in a joint effort to improve preparedness and response strategies to weather and climate extreme events.
The event is being spearheaded by the Chairperson of the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Engineering Management (DPEM)- Dr. Veronica Kiluva, and includes technical sessions, case study discussions, and hands-on training. As part of the program, participants have visited the MMUST Weather Station to familiarize themselves with the University’s resources that support environmental research from student-level projects to professional studies.

Guided by the theme ‘Open Science Involving Local Communities,’ the workshop seeks to empower participants with knowledge and tools for climate risk analysis, early warning systems, disaster communication, and integration of indigenous knowledge in resilience planning. Special attention is being given to participatory research approaches and community-driven solutions.
