MMUST One of the Two Universities in Kenya Set to Participate in the 2025 Global SDG Olympiad in Geneva
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is one of the two Universities in Kenya set to participate in the 2025 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Olympiad in Geneva. The highly anticipated global competition, slated for 10th to 13th October, 2025, targets undergraduate and postgraduate students across all disciplines, in a bid to co-create solutions for the United Nations SDGs. As part of the preparations towards the competition, MMUST student innovators have been undergoing pitching mentorship sessions as well as capacity building on SDGs. These activities are being conducted by the MMUST Science Park Innovation and Incubation Centre (SPIIC) in conjunction with the University of Geneva and the United States International University Africa (USIU), the other participating University from Kenya.
This year’s competition, themed ‘Planetary Health’, will see MMUST student innovators explore the intersections of technology, sustainability, and community engagement. Their efforts will focus on creating practical prototypes that leverage AI and crowdsourcing to generate meaningful data and track global progress towards the SDGs. Currently, there are eleven (11) teams in MMUST, consisting of 2 to 5 members, with innovations ranging from health, environment to food security aspects of SDGs. These innovations are being assessed locally and the most promising solutions will advance to compete at the global SDG Olympiad event, where finalists share their ideas, connect across borders and scale impact.
