
MMUST Staff and Students Join CS Oparanya and PS Inyangala in Tree Planting Drive to Mark Mazingira Day
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) staff and students joined the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, Hon. Wycliffe Oparanya, and the Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, in a tree planting exercise to mark Mazingira Day in Malava Constituency.
The team moved across various parts of the constituency, planting trees in designated sites to support Kenya’s ongoing environmental restoration agenda. The exercise brought together government officials, university representatives, students, and community members in a show of unity toward a greener and more sustainable future.

MMUST was ably represented by Prof. Stanley Omuterema, who led the delegation on behalf of the Vice Chancellor. Other members of staff present included Dr. Eglay Tsuma, Dr. Lydia Anyonje, Dr. Joyce Kasili, Dr. Angeline Savala, Mr. Oscar Waswa, and Mr. Canon Odhiambo. They were joined by a group of students from various schools across the University, who participated actively in the planting sessions and environmental awareness activities.
Speaking during the event, Prof. Omuterema reaffirmed MMUST’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability initiatives. “As a University, we are proud to be part of the national effort to restore our environment. Every tree we plant today represents our shared responsibility toward future generations,” he said.

Hon. Oparanya commended MMUST for consistently supporting national development goals through research, innovation, and community outreach. He encouraged the youth to take an active role in safeguarding the environment, noting that tree planting is a simple yet powerful act of patriotism.
Dr. Inyangala echoed the sentiments, highlighting the critical role of universities in developing evidence-based solutions to environmental challenges. She urged institutions of higher learning to integrate sustainability into their academic and operational frameworks.
The Mazingira Day celebrations served as a reminder of the importance of collective action in environmental protection. MMUST continues to champion sustainability through its academic programs, research, and community-based initiatives aimed at promoting environmental awareness and climate action.
