MMUST Council in Its Ongoing Expansion Efforts Inspects University Campuses, Assessing Their Suitability for Full Accreditation
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s Council has conducted a two-day inspection exercise in the three (3) University campuses to assess their suitability for full accreditation. The inspection, which took place from 12th to 13th November, 2025 in the Webuye (MMUST TVET College), Butula and Bungoma campuses, is part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to expand the University. The exercise was spearheaded by Council member, Ms. Dorothy Kimeu, who was standing in for the Chairperson of Council, Dr. Pamela Sitienei. The Council team comprised Dr. Kennedy Olungo, Ms. Eunice Wakofula, Ms. Grace Kimotho, Ms. Susan Nyasinga, as well as the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo.
“The University Council is focused on expanding MMUST campuses in a bid to reach more students, and consequently increase the institution’s revenue streams. There is a need to make our campuses more vibrant while ensuring that we adhere to the Commission for University Education’s standards and guidelines in order to attain full accreditation for them,” remarked Ms. Kimeu during a meeting at the MMUST TVET College-Webuye.

Speaking at the same venue, Prof. Shibairo noted that the University Management’s goal is to see that the MMUST TVET College becomes a center of excellence, attracting students from across the Country. “I am glad to point out that we have acquired ownership of this land and that we have full support from the County Government of Bungoma to operationalize this campus,” added the Vice Chancellor.
“This visit sends a message of confidence and renewed hope for this young but vibrant institution. Within the last seven months, we have been able to operationalize this campus and successfully admit two cohorts of students for the Diploma in Pedagogy programme,” stated the Acting Principal-MMUST TVET College, Prof. Stephen Odebero. In his speech, Prof. Odebero pointed out that the College boasts well-lit classrooms, functional laboratories and workshops, accessibility features for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), as well as a library with a large collection of physical books and one that has access to over 3 million e-books. He added, “the recent TVETA assessment confirmed that the College’s foundation is strong, the administrative framework is compliant, the governance structure is functional and that the staff are fully committed. We have also received confirmation from the Authority that six of our programmes are ready for delivery.”

In Bungoma campus, the Council was received by the Director, Prof. William Wanjala Toili, who in his presentation revealed that the facility was established in 2008 as MMUST’s first branch. “This campus has adequate physical facilities to support the various academic and non-academic programmes offered here. Although we have met most of the Commission for University Education’s requirements, there are a few issues that need to be addressed for full accreditation,” stated Prof. Toili, adding that plans are underway for the campus to focus on programme specialization and niche targeting as a strategy for enhancing the student population.

“The MMUST Butula campus operates under a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the Butula Centre for Education, Research and Development-BUCERED. The local community has been very supportive towards the development of this campus, as they envision having a University College in their region, which will not only serve as a center for training, research and innovation, but also create employment opportunities,” said the MMUST Butula Campus Coordinator-Dr. Joel Ogutu, adding that the establishment continues to receive significant funding from Butula’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF). Notably, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Hussein Golicha, was present during the Butula visit by the Council. He reiterated that the community is eager to see the campus fully operational, saying that MMUST is in full support of ensuring that it grows into what it has been intended to become.
