UASU-MMUST Chapter Holds AGM, Focusing on Enhancing Solidarity, Unity and Member Welfare
The Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU)-MMUST Chapter has conducted an Annual General Meeting (AGM), under the theme ‘Scaling up Solidarity through Cohesion, Unity and Improved Member Welfare’. The AGM, which took place on Wednesday, 26th November, 2025 at the Chapter’s Milimani Offices, recorded a very high turnout, including participation from the officials of the sister Union, the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU). It also saw the acknowledgment of Prof. Aggrey Mukasa Simiyu, a recent retiree of MMUST, who has been one of the longest serving members of UASU.
The Chairperson-UASU MMUST Chapter, Dr. Ronald Wamalwa, in his remarks pointed out that the Union has continuously engaged with the University Management on matters of members’ welfare, such as promotions, internal Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), as well as part-time payments. “As Union officials, we appreciate you for turning out in large numbers in support of the recent 50-day strike on the national CBAs. Consequently, we were able to get tranche of two of 2021-2025 arrears, commitment of two portions of 2017-2021 arrears and one-month commitment of negotiation, signing, registering and implantation of national CBA 2025-2029,” stated Dr. Wamalwa, adding that UASU pledges to continue representing and protecting the welfare of dons.

UASU-MMUST Chapter Secretary General, Dr. Robinson Oduma, hands over a certificate of recognition to Prof. Aggrey Simiyu.
“We thank UASU members for their unwavering support towards us. I assure you that our commitment to working towards realizing our objectives for the common good of staff is uncompromisable,” said the Chapter Secretary General, Dr. Robinson Oduma. In his report, the SG highlighted some key issues, which directly impact the performance of academic staff in the University. The issues ranged from promotions of academic members of staff, part-time claims, the working environment, thesis supervision and examination payments, local and national CBAs, to members’ disciplinary matters.
The climax of the event was a detailed report of the Union’s financial statements for the year ended 31st December, 2024. The report, audited by an independent auditor, Kirugu & Associates Certified Public Accountants (K), entailed the income statement, statement of financial position, and the cash flow statement. The auditor opined that these statements gave a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Chapter as at the end of that financial year and of its operating results and cash flow for the year then ended. The Treasurer’s report was also presented by the Chapter Treasurer, Rev. Dr. Angeline Savala Hicks. Her 2025 finance report based on the 2024 financial year as well as the proposed budget for the year 2026. Similarly, Prof. Kubasu Kwashe (Trustee 1) presented the Trustee’s report, which covered a 12-month period, from 1st November, 2024 to 30th October, 2025.

The Vice Chairperson-UASU MMUST Chapter, Dr. Michael Ojiema, speaks at the event.
The AGM provided a platform for open discussions, emphasizing the need for collective effort in addressing challenges, while at the same time promoting the interests of all UASU members. The meeting reaffirmed the Union’s commitment to member welfare, indicating its continued dedication towards advocating for meaningful and lasting change.
