MMUST’s Department of Biological Sciences Hosts Workshop on Evolution and Biodiversity to Nurture High-Caliber Researchers!
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s Department of Biological Sciences on 3rd and 4th March, 2026, hosted a workshop on evolution and biodiversity, at SPD. The two-day event aimed to mentor students into high-caliber researchers through a series of intensive, student-led presentations.

Dr. Mario Kollenberg makes his presentation.
The training was spearheaded by Dr. Mario Kollenberg, a Senior Lecturer from the Department, within the School of Natural Sciences (SONAS). According to Dr. Kollenberg, the training served a dual purpose: nurturing technical research expertise while simultaneously refining essential soft skills such as public speaking and presentation skills.
“This training will also help our students to deepen their understanding of evolution and biodiversity,” said Dr. Kollenberg.

A section of the participants keenly follows the presentations.
The workshop was attended by the Dean SONAS, Dr. Joseph Owino; CoD Biological Sciences, Dr. Jackson Cheruiyot; alongside other faculty members including Dr. Sandra Khatiebi and Mr. Jared Ngurwe, who also shared their presentations during the workshop.
Such exposure is critical as it bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional practice. These steps will certainly go a long way in transforming students from passive learners into confident, articulate scientific leaders ready to address global biodiversity challenges!
