Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is currently undertaking the 9th MMUSO Student Leaders’ Induction and Training Workshop, aimed at equipping newly elected student leaders with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to provide effective and responsible leadership.
The four-day workshop, which commenced on 8th September 2026 and runs through 11th September 2026, is organized by the office of the Dean of students under the leadership of Dr. Bernadette Abwao and is being held at Kisumu Hotel. It brings together student leaders and senior University managers and staff.
The training provides a platform for the student leaders to understand their responsibilities and strengthen their capacity to serve as effective representatives of the student body and partners in advancing the University’s objectives.
The official opening programme featured remarks from senior University management, including the Vice Chancellor- Prof. Solomon Shibairo, who delivered the keynote address, alongside the Dean of Students, Registrars and Deputy Vice Chancellors.

Speaking during the official opening of the event, Prof. Shibairo challenged the student leaders to strike a balance between their leadership responsibilities, academic excellence and service to the University community. He urged them to maintain a strong academic record throughout their tenure, noting that leadership should not come at the expense of their studies. He further encouraged the leaders to use their positions to positively impact the institution and improve the lives of their fellow students, while ensuring that their actions contribute to the achievement of the University’s vision, mission and strategic objectives.
“As student leaders, you have been entrusted with an opportunity to serve, but that responsibility should never compromise your academic journey. Maintain a good academic record, leave a positive mark on this institution, and use your leadership to make a meaningful difference in the lives of other students. When your tenure comes to an end, let your legacy be defined not only by the position you held, but by the positive impact you made,” said Prof. Shibairo.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Hussein Golicha, congratulated the newly elected MMUSO leaders and emphasized the importance of responsible student leadership in fostering a harmonious and productive University environment. Speaking during the student induction training, Prof. Golicha reminded the leaders that their positions come with the responsibility of serving as a link between the student body and University management. He urged them to prioritize their academic work while maintaining constructive engagement with both students and management, noting that effective student leadership requires diplomacy, mutual understanding and a commitment to the University’s overall interests.
The workshop is focusing on critical aspects of leadership, including Transformative Leadership, Leadership Psychology – Dr. Pauline Adhiambo, Communication, Protocol and Etiquette – Dr. Eglay Tsuma University Policy Documents – Prof. Christopher Ngacho, Time Management and Personal Organisation – Prof. Stephen Odebero, Spirituality and Leadership – Fr. Dr. Kizito Muchanga, and responsible student leadership – Dr. Dennis Maiyo.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor of Planning, Research and Innovation, Prof. Christopher Ngacho, emphasized the importance of student leaders familiarizing themselves with the University’s policy documents and regulations. He noted that a clear understanding of these policies would enable the leaders to make informed decisions, effectively represent the interests of students and engage University management within the established institutional framework. He urged the leaders to use their tenure as an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the University’s operations while exercising their responsibilities in accordance with existing policies and procedures.
“As student leaders, you cannot effectively represent your colleagues if you do not understand the policies and regulations that govern the University. Take time to read, understand and appreciate these documents, because they provide the framework within which you must exercise your leadership responsibilities,” said Prof. Ngacho.

Deputy Vice Chancellor of Planning, Research and Innovation, Prof. John Kuria Thuo, emphasized the importance of collaboration between MMUSO leaders, University management and the wider student body in promoting a smooth and progressive University environment. He urged the student leaders to maintain open and constructive engagement with management while remaining responsive to the needs and aspirations of their fellow students, noting that effective cooperation among the three stakeholders is essential for the University to move forward seamlessly.
“As student leaders, you are an important link between the students and University management. Work closely with management, listen to the concerns of your fellow students and help us find solutions that move the University forward. When we work together with a shared vision and mutual respect, we can ensure that the affairs of the University run smoothly and that every student benefits from a conducive environment for learning and growth,” remarked Prof. Thuo.

A key component of the training was a presentation by Dr. Dennis Ochieno, highlighting the role of student leaders in enhancing University web visibility and ranking, noting that students are key in making vital contribution towards strengthening the University’s image and visibility.
The programme further addresses contemporary challenges affecting institutions of higher learning, including countering radicalization and violent extremism among the youth and building a drug-free campus through responsible student leadership.Speaking during the sessions, facilitators have emphasized the importance of integrity, effective communication, teamwork, responsible decision-making and service to the student community as essential attributes of successful leadership.

The training is being coordinated by Dr. Bernadatte Abwao, Dean of Students, with Mr. Oscar Waswa serving as the Master of Ceremonies.
As the 9th MMUSO leadership undergoes the induction, the University continues to underscore the importance of preparing student leaders not only to represent their peers, but also to contribute positively to the University’s growth and development.
The workshop will conclude on 11th September 2026, marking an important step in preparing the new student leadership for a successful and impactful tenure.
