
MMUST Hosts Key Sporting Events as 2025 National Secondary School Games Officially Kick Off in Kakamega County
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) is at the center of this year’s highly anticipated Kenya Secondary Schools Term Two National Games, which officially kick off on 29th July 2025. The championship begins with thrilling preliminary matches scheduled to run through to 31st July 2025, followed by semifinals on 1st August, and culminating in the finals and playoffs on Saturday, 2nd August 2025. MMUST is hosting four major games including Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis, and Netball. The competitions will take place across multiple venues in the region, with the national championship expected to showcase impressive displays of youthful talent that can be tapped for future development. This event also provides a prime opportunity to identify and nurture the next generation of sporting stars.
This week-long championship features teams from all eight regions of Kenya including Nairobi, Central, Eastern, Western, Coast, Rift Valley, North Eastern, and Nyanza. Football matches for both boys and girls will be played at Mukumu Boys, Kakamega High School, and Mumias Sports Complex. Rugby matches will take place at the Bull Ring Stadium, while Beach Volleyball will be held at the Approved School.

The Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo, lauded the University’s role as a host of these national games saying that MMUST is honored to play a central role in advancing youth talent and promoting national cohesion through sports. “We are delighted to host part of this prestigious event. MMUST is committed to nurturing young talent and offering platforms that promote growth, excellence, and national cohesion through sports,” said Prof. Shibairo.
The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) President, Mr. Kipchumba Maiyo, who is also the Chief Principal of Kapsabet Boys’ High School, underscored the significance of these games, noting that they are more than just a contest of skill. “These championships serve as a transformative platform where raw talent is discovered, strong values are instilled, and the spirit of discipline, teamwork, and resilience is nurtured in our young boys and girls,” stated Mr. Maiyo.

Additionally, Mr. Maiyo cited the inspiring journey of Aldrine Kibet, a former secondary school athlete who secured a move to Spanish LaLiga (Celta Vigo), as an evidence of how these championships can be life-changing and open doors to international opportunities.

In the girls’ football category, Pool A features the defending champions Butere Girls (Western), alongside Ruiru Girls (Central), Dr. Charles (Eastern), and Nasokol (Rift Valley). Pool B brings together strong contenders including Madira Girls, last year’s runners-up from Western, Dagoretti Mixed (Nairobi), Kobala Girls (Nyanza), and Mwanambeyu (Coast).

In the boys’ football competition, Pool A comprises Moi High School Mbiruri (Eastern), Agai (Nyanza), Musingu (Western), and a team from North Eastern. Pool B features Kirangari (Central), St. Joseph’s Kitale (Rift Valley), Serani (Coast), and the defending champions, Highway High School from Nairobi.

Volleyball boys’ Pool A has Gogo Boys (Nyanza), Cheptil (Rift Valley), Kambaa (Central), and North Eastern, while Pool B features Mwaluphamba (Coast), Malava Boys (Western), Ruthimitu (Nairobi), and Gankanga (Eastern). In girls’ volleyball, Pool A comprises Kinale (Central), Soweto (Nairobi), Moi Forces Academy (Coast), and Kesogon (Rift Valley). Pool B has Bishop Sulumeti (Western), Kwanthanze (Eastern), Nyakongo (Nyanza), and North Eastern.

Indeed, hosting the 2025 National Secondary School Games is a significant milestone for MMUST as it affirms the University’s capacity to facilitate high-level sporting events and reinforces its role as a center of excellence in both academic and extracurricular development.
