MMUST Hosts Staff from South Africa’s African Eye Institute Under NOREC-Supported Exchange Programme
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has today, 1st September 2026, welcomed two staff members from the African Eye Institute (AEI), South Africa, under a six-month staff exchange programme supported by the Norwegian Agency for International Cooperation and Quality Enhancement in Higher Education (NOREC). The programme seeks to promote professional and academic exchange, knowledge and skills sharing, cultural understanding, and institutional networking between participating institutions.

The visiting staff members, Xoliswa Hlabisa and Samkele Shange, were received by the Director, Directorate of International Relations and Academic Linkages (DIAL), Dr. Umulkher Ali, before paying a courtesy call on the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Planning, Research and Innovation, Prof. Christopher Ngacho, who represented the Vice Chancellor. Prof. Ngacho welcomed the duo to MMUST saying that the exchange programme is important in strengthening academic collaboration, knowledge sharing and professional capacity building between MMUST and the African Eye Institute (AEI). He noted that such partnerships provide valuable opportunities for the exchange of expertise, skills and experiences, while contributing to the advancement of training and professional development in specialized areas.

During their six-month stay, Hlabisa and Shange will be hosted by the School of Public Health, Biomedical Sciences and Technology, Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, where they will engage with staff and participate in relevant academic and professional activities. The exchange forms part of the academic collaboration and staff exchange activities between MMUST and AEI, with a focus on supporting training, knowledge sharing and capacity building in Optometry and Vision Sciences.
The University looks forward to a fruitful exchange that will strengthen existing relationships and create lasting networks between MMUST and AEI.
