MMUST Student Flavian Otiyo Selected To Join Kenya 7s National Team
MMUST student and rugby player Flavian Otiyo has been selected to join the Kenya 7s National Team, Shujaa, following the conclusion of the 2026 National 7s Circuit. Otiyo is a second-year, Diploma student pursuing Business Management, specializing in Finance and Banking. His journey in university rugby began in 2025 when he joined the MMUST Rugby Club, popularly known as the Makaka, where he has since featured in several competitive matches.
Through his performances with the Makaka, Otiyo has continued to develop his skills and gain valuable experience in competitive rugby, culminating in his selection to the national 7s team. He is expected to report to the Shujaa camp on 17th September 2026 at RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi, for medical and physical assessments, training and other team activities. Otiyo’s selection reflects his commitment, discipline and consistent performance on the rugby field, while balancing his sporting career with his academic pursuits at the University.

According to MMUST Rugby Coach John Asila, Otiyo’s selection is a reflection of his hard work, talent and commitment to the sport. “Otiyo is a young, hardworking and talented player, and we are happy for him. We hope he continues to carry the University’s name higher as he takes on this new challenge. Recently, we had Sudi, and now Otiyo. I am sure that as we move into the 15s season, we will have more players earning opportunities at the national level. We are grateful for the University’s continued support of rugby. Certainly, MMUST is producing young players who are prepared to compete in the modern sporting environment,” said Coach Asila.
Speaking to the DCCM team, Otiyo expressed his delight at the selection, describing the opportunity to join Shujaa as an important platform for him to grow as a player, gain valuable experience and challenge himself at the national level.

“I feel great to have been selected to join Shujaa. I am proud of myself and grateful for the opportunity. I sincerely appreciate the MMUST Rugby Team, my coaches and teammates for their support, guidance and encouragement throughout my journey. This selection motivates me to work even harder, continue improving my game and make MMUST proud as I represent Kenya,” he said.
This call-up marks a significant achievement for both MMUST and Otiyo, underscoring the University’s contribution to nurturing and developing sporting talent. As he takes on this new challenge, the University congratulates Flavian Otiyo on his selection to Shujaa and wishes him success as he takes this important step in his rugby career while representing MMUST and Kenya at the national level.
