Project Title: INCLUSIVE AND INNOVATIVE DIGITAL EDUCATION FOR MIGRANT COMMUNITY IN KENYA AND SOMALIA (IIDEMIC).

Research project Consortium comprises the following institutions:

  1. Kenyatta University, Kenya- lead institution
  2. Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenya
  3. Dumlupinar Kutahya University, Turkey;
  4. WSB University Poznan, Poland;
  5. Mogadishu University, Somalia and
  6. Red Sea University, Somalia.

 Total research grant won by the consortium: 719,939 Euros (KES 120,569,704.84)

The proposed programme aims to:

  1. Create a lifelong learning platform that is accessible to the refugee and migrant population that will be used to build requisite capacities aimed at increasing employability opportunities in Kenya and Somalia. 
  2. Develop an accessible data Centre with adaptive features to cater for all kinds of disabilities and to assist refugees and migrants with special needs and disabilities access vital information. 
  3. Develop an Inclusive Education programme aimed at developing teachers’ skills in inclusive pedagogy
  4. Strengthen soft skill competencies among Somali refugees in Kenya and IDPs in Somalia to improve their entrepreneurial innovation and uptake of opportunities afforded through technology.
  5. Promote critical skills and competencies among Somali refugees and other refugees in Kenya and globally for self-reliance. 
  6. Promote teacher practice and use of assistive technologies in refugee and migrant classrooms; integrate 21st century soft skills in supporting all learners from the migrant population. 
  7. Empower refugees, host communities and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) through tertiary education, research and partnerships in refugee camps in Dadaab and Kakuma, Kenya
  8. Harness the capacity of ICT to improve access, quality, and management of education and training systems among Somali migrants 
  9. Promote the development and use of online content taking into account African and local specificities 
  10. Provide appropriate and sufficient equipment facilities (e.g., connectivity, power) and services
