On 22nd June, 2022, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) AIDS Control, Gender and Disability Mainstreaming Unit Committee paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Officer, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, County Government of Kakamega Ms. Dorine Amwoga. The visit was aimed at setting the ground for possible partnership between the two institutions.
The team was received by the Director, Education Support, Mr. Victor Shilisia. Representing the Chief Officer, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Human Resource Manager, Ms. Jackline Athieno Othieno expressed her delight in being associated with an institution of Higher Learning noting that she has seen MMUST grow to become the first public University in Kenya with a registered TVET institute. “There has been a low female representation in STEM-related occupations which has, in turn, affected the choice of fields selected by the female students. This partnership will ensure we reach those students and encourage them to participate in STEM-related occupations,” said Ms. Athieno.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Alcohol and Drug Abuse Committee has today 21 June 2022 commenced a five (5) day workshop for purposes of equipping members with drug abuse intervention skills. The workshop, which was sponsored by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), was held at the Main Catering Unit (MCU) Boardroom. This key event in the University’s calendar themed was organized by the committee chairperson, Dr. Dennis Omayio.
The event targeting workers is geared towards preventing, controlling and mitigating impacts of drug abuse in Kenya. This is carried out under key thematic areas, namely, Public Education and Advocacy, Counselling and Rehabilitation, Compliance, Quality Control and Risk Management as well as Research and Policy Development.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology students are among the just concluded Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) mentorship program at the University of Delaware, United States of America (USA). SUSI is an intensive short-term mentorship program for female student leaders in developing countries.
The SUSI program began on 1st June, 2022 to 15th June, 2022, and aims at providing a deeper understanding of the culture, Education for self-reliance to groups of Undergraduate student leaders, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The selection of these students involved a keen interview that was chaired by the US Embassy Attaché to Kenya and two panelists from MMUST, namely; Prof. John Muoma and Mr. Moses Onyango.
We are delighted to inform you that Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology’s risk mitigation expert, Dr. Nicodemus Nyandiko, has been appointed to the advisory committee of the global Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD). This appointment was effected as from 28th May, 2022.
PDD is a State-led initiative, based in Switzerland, which works towards better protection for people displaced across borders in the context of disasters and climate change.
The Advisory Committee consists, inter alia, of individuals and representatives of international and regional organizations, research institutions, academia, private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other civil society stakeholders. Dr. Nyandiko’s appointment effectively places MMUST in the league of disaster displacement giants in the world.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) research team dubbed ‘The eagles’ has partnered with key stakeholders from Busia County to jointly search for mega grants. This was exhibited on Thursday, 9th June 2022 when they held a bilateral meeting to partner with stakeholders from Busia County in matters research. The aim of the meeting was to brainstorm on prospects that may attract mega grants and ensure implementation of the research findings by University researchers. This research titled ‘COVID-19 Exposures, Risks and Vulnerabilities among School Going Children in Bunyala, Busia County’, is among those funded under the University Research Funds (URF).
In a bid to address the perennial shortage of blood in the region and country as a whole, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) staff and students turned out in large numbers to donate blood in a bid to save lives. This was during the Blood Donation Drive initiative, which took place on Tuesday, 14th June, 2022 at the University’s Graduation Square. The initiative was organized through the Kenya Red Cross Society and sponsored by MMUST in partnership with the Standard Chartered Bank and Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day.
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is now the official administrator and owner of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education International Conference (STEMEIC), as well as a digital library with over sixty (60) thousand eBooks. Yesterday, 14th June, 2022, Diversity Education Institute Africa (DEI-Africa) handed over the management of STEMEIC and the library to MMUST, in a semi-virtual ceremony that was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo and the DEI-Africa Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Alphonse Furuma.
Speaking during the event, Prof. Shibairo expressed gratitude to DEI-Africa for entrusting MMUST with the management of both the Conference and the digital library. “As a University, we are honored to have the opportunity of running the STEMEI Conference and the digital library. I want to assure you that the two (2) are in safe hands. The University Management has been supporting DEI and MMUST projects and will continue to support future collaborations,” stated Prof. Shibairo.
Today 14th June 2022, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology African Women in Science and Engineering (AWSE), put smiles on girls’ faces when they donated sanitary towels to students at St. Joseph’s Girls’ High School, Kakamega. The drive was led by the Chairperson AWSE, Western Chapter and MMUST lecturer Dr. Seline Ooko, Secretary AWSE, Ms. Judith Dipondo and Purity Muchere- Member AWSE.
This drive is the product of a Research funded by the University Research Fund (URF) that was conducted at St. Joseph’s Girls High School where the scholars noticed that many girls come from humble backgrounds and could not afford sanitary towels.
