MMUST Scientist Appointed Africa CDC Regional Expert in Biorisk Management
A senior medical laboratory technologist from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), Levis Ochieng Wandolo, has been appointed as an Africa Region Subject Matter Expert (Af-RSME) in Biorisk Management and Biomedical Waste Management under the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
His onboarding took place during a regional biosafety and biosecurity workshop in Accra from March 30 to April 3, 2026, which was co-organized by Africa CDC and the African Society for Laboratory Medicine. In this pivotal role, Wandolo is tasked with bolstering biorisk management systems throughout Africa, providing technical expertise in biosafety and biosecurity, aiding in the development and harmonization of policies and guidelines, mentoring laboratories and institutions, and advocating for best practices in the secure handling, containment, and disposal of biological materials and biomedical waste.

Additionally, he will engage in regional capacity-building initiatives, training programs, and collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing readiness for emerging public health threats. His appointment is poised to elevate MMUST’s standing within continental health security initiatives, creating avenues for research, collaboration, and professional advancement. As a university we are proud of Mr. Wandolo as we anticipate that this will particularly reinforce the Biosafety and Biosecurity program within the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, facilitating greater access to regional expertise, specialized training, and robust policy frameworks.
This development aligns with the university’s aspirations to actively pursue the One Health agenda and address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) regionally. Wandolo has expressed enthusiasm about this opportunity, committing to utilize his new position to propel institutional objectives, foster academic growth, and establish partnerships that will be advantageous for both staff and students.
