
MMUST’s School of Computing and Informatics Equips Students With Skills for the Job Market
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) continues to rise as one of the premier institutions in Kenya, Africa and globally in terms of academic excellence and skill-based education. MMUST’s School of Computing and Informatics (SCI) led by the Dean, Dr. Daniel Otanga, highlights the institution’s strong commitment to academic and technological advancement. The school stands out as a top-tier center of learning and innovation, offering a wide range of programs tailored to meet both local and international technological demands.
The School of Computing and Informatics consists of two departments : Computer Science and Information Technology. The programs are offered at multiple academic levels ranging from Certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate, Master’s and PhD. The programmes include PHD in Information Technology (IT), Masters in Computer Science and Masters in IT, Bachelor of science in IT, Bachelor of Technology Education (Computer studies), Bachelor of science (Computer science), Bachelor of Science (Information Systems and knowledge management and Bachelor of Science (Computer security and forensics), Diploma in IT, Diploma in software development, Diploma in Technology in Computer systems and Diploma in Business IT and Certificate in IT.

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Security and Forensics has a specific intake date of August 1st each year. These programs are designed with a practical, hands-on approach, ensuring graduates are fully equipped for the competitive job market.
“The Computer Science curriculum at MMUST is one of the best. Our graduates consistently perform exceptionally well in the job market. By the end of their second year, our students are job ready because we train them using the most current technologies, which gives us a competitive edge,” said Dr. Angulu Raphael, the Chairperson of the Department of IT.
Speaking during an interview with DCCM team, the Coordinator- Industrial Training, Mr. Waliaro Apollo, elaborated on the School’s emphasis on market-oriented training as they focus on giving their students practical skills in areas like full stack programming, where they learn to develop systems from both the front end and back end. They also train them in computer repair and maintenance, systems administration including user account creation, Internet of Things (IoT), project development, networking and CCTV installation.

The School of Computing and Informatics is highly digitized, offering platforms such as a student portal for accessing academic resources and updates. In addition, MMUST employs Open, Distance, and E-Learning (ODEL) systems, enabling lecturers to upload learning materials and facilitate flexible learning. Students at SCI expressed their satisfaction with the quality of education and hands-on training provided by the school.
“The trimester system is the best because the first and second semesters focus on theory, while the third is purely practical. When I joined MMUST, I had no technical skills, but now I can code, program and work with databases,” said Ms. Herin Adhiambo, a second-year IT student -School of Computing and Informatics, MMUST.
Similarly, Ms. Laurah Shaviya, a Computer Science student also shared her perspective saying that she was looking to venture into research and innovation, and MMUST has proven to be a hub for both. She has gained comprehensive skills in her course, and she truly believes that the School of Computing and Informatics is the best place for any tech-driven student.
