MMUST Showcases Groundbreaking Research and Innovation at the 2025 Nairobi International Trade Fair
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) reaffirmed its reputation as a leading research and innovation hub during the 2025 Nairobi International Trade Fair, held at the Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi under the theme “Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade.”
MMUST participated in the show on 3rd and 4th October 2025, showcasing a diverse portfolio of cutting-edge innovations and research outputs that address pressing societal needs in health, agriculture, environment, and technology. The University’s delegation was led by the Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation), Prof. Peter Bukhala, who steered a dynamic team of researchers, innovators, and students.

A key highlight of the exhibition was the strong presence of the MMUST Innovation Academy, which is housed under the Directorate of Science Park, Innovation and Incubation Centre (SPIIC) headed by Dr. Tecla Sum. The Academy continues to play a pivotal role in nurturing creativity, guiding research commercialization, and supporting innovators to transform ideas into impactful solutions.
Among the outstanding MMUST innovators who showcased their work were: Prof. Maurice Omollo – who exhibited medicinal and nutritional supplements designed to improve human health; Prof. Vitalis Ogemah – a key contributor in advancing sustainable agricultural innovations; Dr. Eveline Mmbone – who presented an organic pesticide derived from Mukhombero (Mondia whytei) and lemon peels, offering an eco-friendly solution for pest control; Hesbon Amwayi – who demonstrated an artificial intelligence-based system for the early detection of potato diseases, aimed at enhancing crop productivity; Protus Wawire – who showcased the use of vermilichate as an alternative acaricide, supporting organic livestock management; Teresa Nyandoro – who presented a novel approach in making sanitary towels from sugarcane and sorghum bagasse, turning industrial waste into hygienic, affordable products for women and girls; Joseph Mwangi – who exhibited probiotic yoghurt and guava wine, promoting value addition in local fruit processing; and Polycap Adongo, an active innovator contributing to the development of sustainable community-based technologies.
Speaking during the exhibition, Prof. Bukhala commended the innovators and the research leadership for their contribution to national development through science, technology, and innovation. “Through the Innovation Academy under SPIIC, MMUST continues to produce innovations that respond directly to the needs of society. What we have witnessed here is the true spirit of research in action; knowledge being transformed into tangible impact,” said Prof. Bukhala. He further emphasized that MMUST’s participation at the Nairobi ASK Show not only showcased the University’s research capacity but also created opportunities for collaboration and commercialization.

“The innovations presented here demonstrate the strength of MMUST’s research ecosystem. The structures we have established through SPIIC and the Innovation Academy are enabling our innovators to reach national and global platforms,” he noted.
While in Nairobi, Prof. Peter Bukhala and Mr. James Muriithi (the MMUST Marketing officer) paid a courtesy call to the Nairobi ASK Show offices, where they met with event organizers to discuss areas of collaboration and explore ways to enhance MMUST’s visibility and participation in future national exhibitions.
