
MMUST Partners With County Government of Kakamega and Rotary International to Improve Healthcare in Mumias West Sub-County
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has partnered with the County Government of Kakamega and Rotary International to support improved access to quality healthcare following the commissioning of the Craig Memorial Health Centre in Mumias Central Ward, Mumias West Sub-County. The health facility was commissioned on 26th January 2026, by H.E. Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa in collaboration with Rotary International, led by Dr. Kim Baxstar. The initiative coordinated by Ms. Eunice Rapando, the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Kakamega aims to strengthen healthcare service delivery and health training.

MMUST’s participation in the project is anchored on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the University, the County Government of Kakamega, and Craig Memorial Dispensary–Nyapora. The MoU provides a framework for collaboration aimed at improving service delivery, strengthening clinical outcomes, and supporting training and research.

Earlier yesterday, MMUST Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, joined the County Government of Kakamega officials and Rotary partners for a breakfast meeting where they deliberated on aspects to strengthen the partnership in healthcare, with a keen focus on eye care and other preventive services.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs)- Prof. Hussein Golicha who was representing the Vice Chancellor. He expressed delight at the project, noting that it reflects MMUST’s commitment to impactful partnerships that enhance healthcare service delivery, strengthen clinical training, and contribute to improved community health outcomes.
The event was also attended by CECM for Health Services Dr. Livingston Imbayi and members of the County Assembly led by Hon. Ali Okomba. MMUST team included the Dean, School of Public Health, Biomedical Sciences and Technology (SPHBST)- Dr. Evans Raballah, the Chairperson of the Optometry Department- Dr. Julius Rono, Dr. Alfred Ragot, Dr. Andrew Wekesa, Dr. Sheilah Nangena and Ms. Doreen Ashioya.

As part of the commissioning, MMUST deployed its Optometry students to provide free eye screening services to members of the community. The outreach offered practical training opportunities for students while addressing a key community health need. The project has a well established Resource Centre designed to enhance practical training, research, and community-based learning to MMUST students pursuing Nursing and Optometry.
This is one of the partnerships MMUST has leveraged on to support the community and provide experiential learning opportunities for its students. Undoubtedly, it underscores the University’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility by integrating academic training with community service to deliver sustainable and impactful healthcare solutions.
