The Barthelsson Foundation–Sweden Donates Eye Equipment Worth Kshs. 1.5 Million to MMUST, Courtesy of Prof. Jörgen Gustafsson!
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology has received eye equipment worth approximately Kshs. 1.5 million from the Barthelsson Foundation in Sweden. This is courtesy of Prof. Jörgen Gustafsson, an adjunct professor at MMUST’s Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences. The equipment, a lightweight and portable handheld Retinomax 5 auto-refractor, was officially received by the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning, Research and Innovation)-Prof. Peter Bukhala, on behalf of the University Management.

Prof. Jörgen tests the equipment on Prof. Bukhala.
An auto-refractor is a fast, automated and non-invasive machine used by eye care professionals to objectively measure a patient’s refractive error (near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism).
Prof. Jörgen has been very instrumental to the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, using his networks to bring in eye equipment to the University, while at the same time mentoring both staff and students during his visits. These generous donations will without doubt contribute immensely towards enhancing specialized eye care training at MMUST.
