MMUST Champions Peer-Led Career Mentorship in Secondary Schools in Siaya and Kakamega Counties
Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology team, on 12th to 14th March 2026, participated in Regional Career Days at Fr. Gulik Girls Secondary School, Sigomre Secondary School and Hawinga Girls High School in Siaya County, as well as St. Mary’s Mumias Girls High School in Kakamega County. They led an impactful peer-to-peer mentorship initiative aimed at guiding and inspiring secondary school learners. The mentorship program was spearheaded by the Director of Career Services, Prof. Robert Egessa, who guided the delivery of structured and engaging sessions tailored to equip learners with practical insights on academic pathways and future career opportunities.

Unlike conventional career talks that rely mainly on senior professionals, the event stood out for its innovative peer-to-peer mentorship approach. MMUST deployed a team of young Career Ambassadors drawn from various faculties, who engaged directly with the students through interactive sessions designed to demystify different career paths. The ambassadors shared firsthand experiences on academic journeys, university life, and emerging career opportunities, creating an open and relatable platform for the secondary school learners to ask questions and make informed decisions about their future careers.

The exercise forms part of a broader career mentorship programme coordinated by the Directorate of Career Services. The Directorate continues to play a key role in bridging the gap between secondary and University education by delivering structured, student-centered mentorship programmes that equip learners with practical insights and confidence.

This is a unique model of career guidance empowering young scholars to inspire and guide the next generation through experience, relatability, and meaningful conversation.
